Is your garage too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer? Does it get dustier than you would like? The experts at El Paso Garage Door recommend installing weather stripping to make your garage more comfortable year round. It helps prevent dirt and debris from entering through the bottom of the garage door and stops heat from escaping through the edge of the door. You’ll experience a cleaner more comfortable environment. Let’s get started.
Step One
Weather stripping and an installation kit for garage door can be easily purchased from your nearest hardware store. Weather stripping is available in a variety of materials. For the most efficient look for one with an aluminium hard plastic nailing strip. This will have a soft vinyl or rubber strip connected to it. The purpose of garage door weather stripping is to have direct contact with the door. The flexible vinyl or rubber piece allows the door to move up and down easily.
Step Two
Before you get to work make sure you have your eyes protected by wearing safety garage door glasses. Take care when you’re using power saws or other tools. Your safety should be your first concern.
Step Three
Remove any old garage door weather stripping by using a hammer and a flat bar. Without damaging the door frame, tap the flat bar under the old stripping and carefully pry it off. Make sure the area is clean and smooth. Now you’re ready to get to work.
Step Four
Make sure all of your tools are easily accessible as you will be installing the weather stripping on the outside of the door. We suggest using a timer saw to make your cuts as it will make fine cuts and your work will be easier. Cut square ends on the header piece. Nail the header piece into position placing the nails at equal intervals from 8 to 18 inches on the centre of the headpiece. Your weather stripping kit will usually have the nail positions marked. If your kit does not contain nails you may use roofing nails.
Step Five
Next you’ll be installing the side pieces. Using a tape measure, measure and cut them to reach from the header piece to the garage floor. Nail the side pieces the same way you did the header piece at equal intervals from 8 to 18 inches. At the top of the side pieces cut the weather stripping at a 45 degree angle so it fits nicely.
Step Six
Your last step is to check the garage door. Open and close it a few time to make sure it works smoothly. If there are any problems, fix them accordingly or call the experts.
